Janine

Writer: Mike WilkinsonMike Wilkinson

I watched you as you sat by the pool

Fair haired, slim, your skin lightly tanned

And glistening with sun oil

You were reading an Agatha Christie novel

And every now and then you would lift your head

To join in part of the conversation you overheard

I could see you smile

And your long dark eyelashes lower

As you went back to reading your book

“Fifteen” I thought

How you’ve grown

No longer a child

Funny, I never noticed before

Can’t say you were ever a tom boy

By nature you were always feminine

Quiet, unassuming and gentle

Beautiful niece

Of mine
